Bring Order to Your Junk Drawer May 18, 2009

We all have junk drawers–in the kitchen, the office, the bedroom.  Whether  you have one or more, they accumulate a lot of things since they’re the catch-all for the things that don’t have a home.

It doesn’t have to stay that way.  You can bring order to your junk drawer.  To start the process, measure your drawer and purchase a drawer organizer with adjustable dividers.  Start by dumping the entire drawer out onto a surface with enough room for you to work and start sorting the items.  Decide what to keep and what you’re going to throw away.  Also create a pile of things that don’t belong in the drawer and put them away once you’re done.  If you can no longer use it, get rid of it.  Make a decision about everything in the drawer.

Once you’ve done that, insert the drawer organizer and adjust the dividers as needed to fit your items into the various sections, then start adding items to teh drawer, placing like items together.  Only put items that you actually use into the drawer and palce the items that you don’t  use so often toward the back of the drawer.

On a regualr basis, purge the drawer of things that you don’t use and if there is something that doesn’t belong in that drawer don’t put it in there!

Spring Organizing For Entertaining Outside May 4, 2009

Spring is really here!  Living in Michigan just because you get to March 21st on the calendar does not mean that you’re experiencing spring weather.  I’m happy to say that we are finally experiencing spring weather here in Michigan.

Along with the start of spring come things that we have to do to get it all in order for the season.  So many people like to pend time outside with friends and family so now’s the time to get the grill and the patio ready for entertaining.

Pull out the grill, dust it off, clean it and get ready to fire it up!   Be sure to get your charcoal, lighter fluid,  and other grilling goodies for the season and store them properly in your garage.

Next, get the patio ready.  Make sure you’ve got a storage chest for the seat cushions-nobody wants to cart them off to the garage or the basement every time you’re done with them to keep them dry and clean.  Visit your local Home Depot or Lowe’s and check out the array of patio boxes/chests available.  Choose one with a water resistant liner and that can stay outdoors all year long.  There are some pretty decorative looking pieces out there and most can double as an extra surface for drinks and snacks.

To round out your entertaining you’ll need an ice chest.  I came across one that is made of  insect and weather resistant cedar.  It can also double as a side table when the top is on.  Get more info on it here.

Now all you have to do is invite friends and family over and enjoy!

Last week I promised to share comments from the workshop participants.  Here’s what one of the virtual workshop participants shared at the end of one of our sessions:

“Sheila, you have helped me to really solidify what I want to do and put it into action.  I’m finally moving forward.  Thank you for what you do”.
